Today, the hope to ease poverty and suffering has evolved through the implementation of a microcredit plus project that serves rural families in Guatemala. Microcredit Friendship Bridge is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works primarily with women in Guatemala. Friendship Bridge utilizes microcredit loans along with educational programs to help women help themselves and their families. Friendship Bridge places urologists in Vietnam and Guatemala for two-week to three-month stints. Spanish speakers are needed for Guatemala. In 1990, as part of Friendship Bridge?s work to bring medical supplies to Vietnam, Co-Founder, Ted Ning established a program whereby U.S. trained urologists can travel to Vietnam to observe, carry in donated new equipment, conduct joint research projects, and train urologists in the latest techniques. Currently, there are only 120 fully trained urologists in Vietnam serving a population of 75,000,000 with the majority of urology practice being performed in provincial hospitals by general surgeons. Dr. Robert Bux and Dr. Robert and Alison Funk with Vietnamese hosts So far, thirty-two urologists from the U.S. have traveled to Vietnam with this program. Vietnam has centralized its urology training programs, concentrating most urologists at the following teaching centers: Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi, Haiphong General Hospital in Haiphong, Hue Central Hospital in Hue and Binh Dan Surgical Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital, in Ho Chi Minh City. Visiting urologists travel to these centers. With the exchange of information and teamwork, as well as the introduction of selected equipment, books, and journals, this program has improved urology practice in Vietnam.
